110 Horse Health Care Overview- Health management for
horses will be discussed in detail. Discussion will cover preventative health
care, sign of distress and injuries, minor first aid and medications, diseases,
parasite control, reproductive care, unsoundness, treatment techniques and
programs and other health related problems commonly seen in horses. Students
will have an opportunity to work "hands on" providing basic health
care and to work with practicing equine health care professionals.
111 Form and Function- This course is designed to show
students how equine conformation, anatomy and physiology affect the way horses
behave and perform as effective herbivores, companions and athletes. It also
looks at how disease, injury and other health issues affect the physical
structures of the horse. In this class, students will dissect a horse leg from
the knee down. Students will also have the opportunity to learn and practice
basic principles of hoof care, trimming and horseshoeing.
112 Equine Nutrition– In this course, students will
learn the basic nutritional needs of horses and how they can be used to design
ideal feeding plans for the individual horse and for groups of horses as a herd.
Students will learn how to identify and purchase quality hay, grain and forage
as well as principles of good pasture management and speakers. Field trips may
allow students to learn about principles of feed productions and distribution,
and about job opportunities in these areas.
