The Best Guide to Horse Health Care

110 Horse Health Care Overview- Health management for horses will be discussed in detail. Discussion will cover preventative health care, sign of distress and injuries, minor first aid and medications, diseases, parasite control, reproductive care, unsoundness, treatment techniques and programs and other health related problems commonly seen in horses. Students will have an opportunity to work "hands on" providing basic health care and to work with practicing equine health care professionals.

111 Form and Function- This course is designed to show students how equine conformation, anatomy and physiology affect the way horses behave and perform as effective herbivores, companions and athletes. It also looks at how disease, injury and other health issues affect the physical structures of the horse. In this class, students will dissect a horse leg from the knee down. Students will also have the opportunity to learn and practice basic principles of hoof care, trimming and horseshoeing.

112 Equine Nutrition– In this course, students will learn the basic nutritional needs of horses and how they can be used to design ideal feeding plans for the individual horse and for groups of horses as a herd. Students will learn how to identify and purchase quality hay, grain and forage as well as principles of good pasture management and speakers. Field trips may allow students to learn about principles of feed productions and distribution, and about job opportunities in these areas.
