Clothing Requirements

As with any sport, there are certain specialized items of clothing that have been time-tested for comfort and safety. The following clothing items are required for all students riding and/or participating in course labs and activities at the Equestrian Center.

RIDING CLASSES

ASTM-SEI approved helmet with harness is required when mounted on a horse at the Equestrian Center and for shows, whether rider is a junior or an adult. Hair must be neatly pulled back under helmets; hair nets help.

Breeches or jodhpurs, jeans and chaps or half chaps.

Tall riding boots, leather preferred. Rubber boots are not appropriate for riding as they prevent lowering of the heel comfortably in most cases. Paddock shoes with 1" heels and tops. (NOT riding tennis shoes) with appropriate pants. Any other footwear is worn only with permission of the instructor (ex: winter riding boots). If you show up for class in tennis shoes, you must ride without stirrups.

Any jacket, sweater, vest, or sweatshirt worn to a riding class must be fitted except in the coldest of weather (20 degrees or below) when layering clothes may require a bulkier jacket.

Gloves for riding, lungeing, and other ground work as required.

IN THE BARN (includes classes/labs where horses are handled from the ground)

Hard soled shoes (closed heel and toe), boots, muckers. NO tennis shoes or sandals.

Shoulder length, or longer, hair tied back during classes where horses are handled from the ground; includes horse care labs, horse health care, and other classes as required by the instructor.

No tee shirts or other clothing with vulgar or obscene writing or pictures.

.

Your instructor, the barn manager or facility manager may excuse you from class if you fail to comply with this dress code as set forth FHFEC.

Shorts, tank tops, halter tops, see through tops and other such clothing are considered unsafe and will not be permitted. Crop-top shirts, long-tailed shirts, low cut, baggy pants and extremely tight clothing will cause discomfort while riding and may be dangerous. Please avoid wearing them. Long shirts should be tucked in while riding. Please use a belt if wearing loose fitting pants. Practice dressing like top professionals do now. No students will be allowed to ride horses while wearing tennis shoes, running shoes, sandals, shoes with no heels or any shoe that is not approved by instructors. Sandals, flip flops and open toed shoes are inappropriate in all stabling, riding and turn-out areas.
