Boarded Horses
A boarded horse is defined as a students’ or students’
family own horse, a horse maintained under full (exclusive use) lease from FHFEC,
or a horse leased or loaned to students by individuals or entities others than
FHFEC. The boarding fee includes stall, feed, shavings, equipment storage and
arena use time. Arena time must fit within the Equestrian Center’s schedule.
Boarding contracts are required. Boarders are not allowed to teach lessons on
their horse. Boarders assume all responsibility and liability for any riders
they place on their horse.
Boarders are responsible for the actions of their friends or
helpers who may be caring for their horse in their absence. It is the duty of
the boarder to inform their associates of the rules and regulations under which
their boarding contract is valid.
All horses boarded at FHFEC must have routine shoeing,
worming and vaccinations as proscribed by the Equestrian Center veterinarian.
Any medication or vet charges will be the sole responsibility of the boarder.
Before a student brings a horse, the following requirements must be met:
A Boarding Contract must be completed.
All horses must be de-wormed and have a Vet Health Certificate verifying
good health and verifying the following vaccinations and their dates within
the past six months: Tetanus, influenza, encephalomyelitis, Potomac horse
fever, strangles and rhinopheumnmtis.
Horse owners are required to provide a negative Coggins test drawn within
6 months of arrival at the Equestrian Center.
Horse must arrive with halter, lead, water and feed buckets with snaps,
any medications, vitamins, supplements, veterinary supplies and all other
equipment pertaining to the maintenance of your horse. Students must supply
their own tack and grooming equipment.
Students should be able to document a veterinary dental exam within 6
months prior to arrival at FHFEC and tooth floating within 1 year of
arrival. If such records are not available, FHFEC may require appropriate
dental care upon arrival.
FHFEC will maintain a feed card on each horse’s stall.
These cards must be filled out completely and kept up to date. Please provide
management with appropriate phone numbers for contact in case of emergency. The
Equestrian Center management and faculty reserve the right to call a
veterinarian in the event of an emergency. Every attempt will be made to contact
the owner of the horse first. Equestrian Center faculty, staff, and
administration will not be responsible for any medical costs.
IN THE INTEREST OF SAFETY, THE FHFEC ANA EIEC ADMINISTRATION,
MANAGEMENT AND FACULTY RESERVE THE RIGHT TO ASK ANY BOARDER TO REMOVE ANY UNRULY
OR UNSAFE HORSE FROM THE EQUESTRIAN CENTER. ANY BOARDER NOT ABIDING BY FOREGOING
RULES AND REGULATIONS WILL BE REQUIRED TO REMOVE HIS/HER HORSE AND BELONGINGS
FROM THE EQUESTRIAN CENTER AND THE BOARDING CONTRACT WILL BE REVOKED AT THE
DISCRETION OF MANAGEMENT
Your Horse's Stall
WATER
You are responsible for cleaning your horse's water bucket. Please provide a
water bucket in your stall, affixed with a double end snap. Owners may provide 2
water buckets if needed.
FEED
All horses are fed 12% textured feed with 6% fat and grass/alfalfa hay. Any
other grains must be supplied at student’s own cost and prepared like
supplements (see below). Horses are fed hay and grain two (2) times daily.
Horses will be fed a maximum of 9 pounds of grain (1 1/2 scoops per
feeding) and 19.5 pounds of hay per day (3 flakes per feeding). There will be an
additional charge for any extra grain at .25 per pound or 2 additional hay
flakes per day at $15.00 per month. A salt block will not be provided as salt is
added to our feed. Boarders may not feed different or additional hay and any
additional FHFEC hay will be fed at feeding times. All feeding will be done by
FHFEC staff. No extra FHFEC hay or grain may be fed by boarder or taken by
boarder.
SUPPLEMENTS
If your horse requires supplements, keep your container home and prepare
each ration in ziplocks, one for each day of the week. Mark your horse’s name
and state AM or PM. Consult with staff upon arrival. FHF does not store bulk
supplements for boarders. Rather, boarders must store bulk containers themselves
and provide FHF with an appropriate number of single dose ziplock bags weekly,
marked with the horse’s name and AM or PM as needed.
MEDICATIONS
Medications that cannot be packaged as feed supplements are entirely the
owner's responsibility. In the event of an emergency, management will administer
these medications for an additional dispensing fee of $2.00. This service is for
emergency use only. Please administer routine medications yourself. College
faculty or staff will not inject medications of any type to private horses
without veterinary consent and recommendation.
FEEDING TIME
Horses are fed at approximately 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
STALL CLEANING
FHFEC will clean stalls 7 days per week. Sawdust bedding will be used. Owner is
responsible for horse’s exercise/turnout (paid turn outs is available) and for
cleaning water and feed buckets. All shavings will be added by FHFEC staff.
Boarders may not add extra shavings without express permission from FHFEC
management and at an additional cost.
DAMAGE
If your horse damages the stall by kicking, chewing, cribbing, etc. you will be
charged for the labor and materials necessary to repair it.
COBWEBS
We recommend that boarders sweep down cobwebs both inside and outside their
stalls.
STALL FRONTS
A halter and lead shank with proper identification must be kept in the
appropriate tack room. Please do not hang more than one blanket on your door.
Blanket should be hung on doors only while the horse is out of the stall or
being groomed. Please do not use stall doors for blanket storage. The extra
weight damages the door rollers. No nails, boxes, notes, blackboard, etc. are
allowed on stall fronts. Do not store tack or clothing on stall doors. Stall
guards are not allowed.
FARRIER*
The farriers used for FHFEC horses are at the farm on a regular basis. You
may choose to use one of our farriers or make arrangements with your own. You
are responsible for your own farrier bills, which must be paid directly to the
farrier. If your horse needs to be held while being shod, please be there
yourself or make arrangements with FHFEC.
VETERINARIAN*
In the event that your horse should become ill, we will make every attempt
to contact you. Failing this, we will summon our vet, as deemed appropriate and
necessary for the proper care of your horse. You are responsible for all
veterinary bills incurred for your horse; they should be paid directly to the
veterinarian. The stable's veterinarian is at the farm regularly.
*If we hold your horse for professional services, a $10.00 an
hour charge will be assessed, with a 1-hour min. charge.
REMOVING YOUR HORSE FROM THE EQUESTRIAN CENTER
We request notification if you will be gone for more than 2 days at a time or,
if moving permanently, we request notice a minimum of 2 weeks in advance of the
date your horse will be leaving. A form must be obtained from the office before
the horse can leave the facility. All or part of your deposit will be held if
this policy is ignored. Subleasing your stall is not permissible.
Horse Shows, Clinics, Public Riding Lessons
We hold several horse shows and clinics at the Equestrian Center annually.
At times boarders may be temporarily inconvenienced. Please understand that an
establishment of this size and quality would be impossible to maintain without
many sources of income. During horse shows, areas involved in the show and used
for warm up are off limits to those not competing. This includes schooling hours
prior to the start of the show and at the lunch break on show days. You may,
however, check with staff for availability of other riding areas available and
the turnouts. Specific riding areas will remain open for schooling for an hour
following the end of the horse show for the day, or until the normal scheduled
closing time. This may be restricted depending on arena footing preparation
needed in the main arena. You are always welcome to participate in these
activities.
Public riding lessons are held after College class hours. For
the safety of less experienced riders, boarders are asked to ride according to
the arena "free time" schedule or to request permission to ride during
lesson time directly from the class instructor. Such permission is a privilege
granted by each instructor, and as such, instructors have the right to deny this
privilege to any horse and rider combination.
