Equine Business Management
113 Stable Management Overview– This course examines
all aspects of quality horse care facilities. It will address principles of
facility location, design, management, finances, routine, staffing, legal
considerations, client considerations and business promotion. Course content is
designed to provide the general background students will need to be successful
in their Horse Farm Project Course. This course will also provide students with
an understanding of the many skills needed to run a successful stable of any
type or size.
114 Horse Farm Project- This class will build a fictious
horse farm on paper. From planning and developing to actually running the farm,
students will work together in teams to create a money making business. This
class will be divided in 3 parts 1)- Real Estate Planning & Development 2)-
Obtaining Equipment and Business Planning 3)- Business Development and
Management. The ground rules will be set on the first day of class and students
will be responsible for researching and gathering data for their project. Class
time will be spent sharing student findings as well as receiving further
instructions.
115 Equine Industry - The equine world is a $25.3 billion
in industry that employs 7.1 million people. This class explores career
opportunities that are available in the horse industry. Students need to prepare
just as thoughtfully for a career in the horse industry as in any other
business. Students will prepare for the job market and will gain a broader
understanding of the prerequisites and career responsibilities in specialized
fields. The class is designed to teach students about the technical knowledge
and practical experience that is needed for where they want to be in our
industry, and to open the doors to a variety of careers working with and around
horses. Students will have the opportunity to see if the profession they want is
right for them with "hands on" job shadowing opportunities and field
trips in some career fields. Students will have a greater appreciation of career
fields and a deeper understanding of how each field impacts the horse industry
as a whole. Field trips will allow students to ask questions and get a better
feel for the occupation.
116 Business Basics- This course will help students learn
the principles of good office management as they apply to a wide variety of
horse related businesses. Students will learn effective techniques for record
keeping, accounting, creating business plans, dealing with tax laws and
requirements, avoiding legal liability and misrepresentation problems, hiring
staff, managing staff, and dealing with customers. Concepts learned in this
class will have direct application in the Horse Farm Project course.
